What is peace?

Mother Teresa said, "If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other." In modern day, where the world is infested with war and conflict, it is difficult for people to see the human race as unified. History is plagued with conflicts based on judgments and preconceptions: large numbers of genocide due to the idea that people without a similar state of though have no right to live, people not gaining their civil rights due to the color of their skin or the religion, etc. And, with all of these grievances that have taken place it is hard not to forget that we as people are all connected. Every action we make causes a chain reaction, we find ourselves in a large web where, with one single movement, the entire web vibrates and if someone were to pull away, there would be a wave of chaos.

Our world has become consumed by greed and hate, and it seems that conflicts are never ending. People are more interested in their own affairs than the world's struggles. It is a surplus of this state of mind that has made it so easy for the world's conflicts to grow. Once people began to lose faith in each other, it allowed an open passage for corruption to enter and expand in the world. Still unwilling to settle differences to end what seems like endless conflict, people have become almost powerless, like single ants each trying to lift boulders ten times their size. It is until people realize what strength and kindness the human population has when teamed together that wars will end and hate will disappear and peace will spread through nations.

Peace is a very broad term though. Some people might envision peace as perfection: no conflict, no anger, no sadness,no suffering, no pain. They visualize a sort of utopia full of model citizens in which there are no opportunities to make mistakes and everything is effortless and tranquil. I believe peace is a state in which people can acknowledge difference and not feel offended or disgusted. It is a state where judgments are received, not with anger, but with acceptance of a person's different point of view. In a peaceful world, conflicts would end, not with violence, but with understanding and acceptance. Peace is the ability to see a stranger and value their life and knowledge without question because with them, humankind is stronger. Every life in interconnected and it only makes sense that rather than break the chain, we try to preserve it.

  1. It is difficult to understand what goes on around the world, when only a few current events reach the public. The government filters news because they do not want chaos or people to constantly worry. What people will never understand is how to prevent those events. From this post, it has come to my attention that the world has become a place of turmoil and hate. The only way to overcome this hate is through love, but if that does not suffice at least accepting each other will. I will wait, with you, for the day that people around the world will learn to accept each other, if the day comes then together we all can value each other for our differences.

  2. Hey Jessica! I liked your post. It is very difficult to see how other worlds are set up. Your post made me realize how different worlds interact. Your quote is very strong. It makes me think of how other people treat other people. Some treat them very bad and it sucks. It made me think about other ways and made me open my eyes to other perspectives. Good job!

  3. I liked your post, it was very intresting. But I have to disagree with you because I dont think there can ever be true peace. I fill it is human nature to fight and want. For we are territorial creatures. Human ego is to heavily identifed with want, greed, and a heavy creaving to fill superior or insuperior. We must all look past this ego for peace and I dont think the world is ready for that challenge.

  4. I really like your post, and I completely agree with your view on what peace truly is. We must all unite together and put aside our differences to be at peace. I'm sure not many people see it the way you do but you explain it so well and with so much understanding of the idea that it's hard to think of someone who wouldn't agree with you after reading this post.

  5. I really like your post and agree with your perception of peace and say that yes we can get close to peace and am glad that we have gotten far. I completely agree with your point of view but say that this is not actually peace, as peace is a cookie cutter utopia where everyone is the same and is absolutely perfect, instead it is the pursuit of peace and equality, the pursuit of justice and forgiveness but also equality that will make our lives without sadness. Peace without equality) is tyranny but peace with equality (though it should not perfect as cookie cutter loses the diversity in life that makes it great) is what we truly should desire.

  6. I like your post I think it is important for us all to get together and put aside our differences. There are more important things then to fight and prove each other wrong for a lot of fights kill many people. So I agree with you and your perception. We need peace, not to be perfect because no one is an absolute perfect human being. If we were that'd be weird and we would simply not be humans but something not of this earth.

  7. it's completely true that whatever one person does sets off a chain reaction and affects more people they they may have anticipated. and sometimes, not always in the most positive way. so if people just learn that we're all the same, even with minor conflicts, we might be able to experience some peace and happiness in this world. which, like you said, does not come from the absence of mistakes but from the understanding people have one to the other. it's something we should really strive for in this life.
